Advancing Insect Welfare in Southeast Asia

As insect farming grows across Southeast Asia, insect welfare remains an emerging and often overlooked issue. We work with farmers, researchers, and industry partners to better understand current practices and advance practical, evidence-based approaches to improving insect welfare.

Contributing to Thailand's Insect GAP Standard

Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) standards play a central role in shaping how insect farming is regulated and practiced at scale — influencing everything from housing conditions to handling and slaughter methods across the industry. As Thailand develops its own GAP standard for insect farming, we’ve taken an active role in the consultation process, working alongside regulators, researchers, and industry representatives to ensure animal welfare is meaningfully reflected in the new guidelines. Our team has reviewed the draft standard in detail, identifying gaps and areas where current welfare science isn’t yet accounted for, and submitted concrete recommendations to strengthen these provisions. By engaging directly in this process, we aim to help ensure that as insect farming grows in Thailand, it does so with practical, welfare-conscious standards built in from the start — rather than added on after the fact.

Deliverables

Knowledge for Local Impact

Scientific research on insect welfare is growing, but much of it remains locked behind English-language journals — out of reach for the farmers, technicians, and industry stakeholders across Thailand and Vietnam who could put it into practice. To bridge this gap, we have translated key scientific papers into Thai and Vietnamese, making the latest findings on welfare-friendly farming practices accessible to the people who need them most. This growing library gives local stakeholders a practical, language-appropriate resource to inform better decisions on the ground — from rearing conditions to slaughter methods — helping turn research into real-world impact.
